Samuchit Enviro Tech is a social enterprise, working in India, since 2005. We are focused on enabling individuals, households, institutions, and small businesses to embrace sustainability in their daily activities. While the majority of our activities are focused in western India, we have been involved with a number of pan-India projects as well as projects in other countries in Asia and Africa, either as service/product providers or as consultants/advisers.
Our core activity is to promote clean cooking technologies based on biomass fuels to address the problem of indoor air pollution and adverse health impacts associated with the traditional biomass based cooking technologies, without pushing the households and institutional/commercial kitchens to LPG, which is a non-renewable fuel. From the same perspective, we have also developed and are promoting a few decentralised and low-carbon “organic waste to biofuel” type technologies, suited for both rural and urban areas in the developing world.
We also promote other environment-friendly products such as solar energy devices, upcycled products made from a variety of waste materials, etc. In addition, we provide advice and consultancy on energy saving, mitigation of pollution and/or greenhouse gas emissions, policy and business strategies for promoting renewable energy technologies, etc.
We also conduct a number of educational activities aimed at informing members of the public about the concepts of sustainable development, carbon footprint, etc.
Dr. Priyadarshini Karve (Ph.D. in Physics, University of Pune) born in 1971, is the CEO of Samuchit Enviro Tech. While working with Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI) she invented a number of improved biomass burning cooking devices, to reduce smoke in the kitchen and dependence on firewood, as well as the technology for converting agricultural waste into 'renewable' charcoal. Her work on innovative ways of commercialisation of clean cooking technologies led to the creation of Samuchit Enviro Tech. Dr. Karve has also invented an easy-to-use Samuchit Carbon Footprint Calculator, and is actively involved in imparting education about sustainable development and climate friendly lifestyles. She has been honoured by several national and international awards, including World Technology Award 2005 (by World Technology Network, New York), Sahyadri Hirkani Award 2011 (by Mumbai Doordarshan, India), etc.
Dr. A.D. Karve (Ph.D in Botany, Germany) born in 1936, has been involved in research in many areas of botany, agriculture and renewable energy since 1960s. He founded Appropriate Rural Technology Institute (ARTI) with colleagues and led the organisation to achieve international stature. The appropriate technologies developed by him have won him international recognition and several prestigious national (Jamnalal Bajaj Award for Application of Science and Technology to Rural Development., etc.) and international (Certificate of Merit from United States Department of Agriculture, etc.) awards. His work in the field of biogas from food waste is considered to be path breaking in the field.
The below are books portraying Dr. Priyadarshini and Dr. Anand's inspirational journey respectively, in their own words.
